SERVICES

ANESTHESIOLOGY

Surgery is both stressful and painful for patients. Anesthesiologists are there to help patients cope with this stress an pain. In order to anesthetize and take care of patients, the anesthesiologist will need to talk and examine the patients before surgery either a day before or on the day of surgery, if patients come on the day of surgery. Some investigations may be ordered when necessary to assess the heart, lungs and other systems. All these will allow the anesthesiologist, who is specially trained to manage acute crisis, to provide safe anesthesia and prepare for any expected complications in very ill patients who require urgent surgery.

Patients will normally be given some medication to help keep calm or to reduce the pain as they are wheeled into the Operating Room. Once in the Operating Room, patients will be connected to monitoring devices that allow the anesthesiologist easy supervision.

The anesthesiologist may use the following techniques to provide anesthesia for patients

General Anesthetics--patients are put to 'sleep' using an injection or inhaling gas. They are unconscious, pain-free and usually unaware.

Regional Anesthetics--injection of local anesthetics to numb the site where surgery is to be done. Some sedation may be given after the injection to calm to patients.

Role of the Anesthesiologist in the Recovery Room

After an operation, patients will be transferred to the recovery room to recuperate from anesthetics. The anesthesiologist will supervise this recovery stage to make sure the patients are awake, comfortable, and stable before allowed to return to the ward, or home for day cases. Patients who have had major surgery and require ventilatory (breathing machine) support will be managed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under the supervision of the anesthesiologist concerned.

Role of the Anesthesiologist in Pain Management

The anesthesiologist can provide relief in all acute pain due to trauma or other acute illnesses, post-surgical pain, labor pain, chronic pain, and pain due to terminal cancer. There are several methods in providing pain relief. Please consult with your anesthesiologist for more information.

For a comfortable and less stressful delivery, mothers-to-be can request for epidural analgesia. This method of labor pain relief makes baby delivery more comfortable. A small catheter is placed into the epidural space at the back of the spine and local anesthetic is injected to numb the nerves to provide pain relief during labor.

Role of the Anesthesiologist in Emergency Resuscitation and Patient Transfer to Other Medical Institutions

Anesthesiologists are specially trained to resuscitate patients who are acutely ill (for example, cardio-respiratory failure). This usually involves other specialists who work together with the anesthesiologist to save a patient's life. In trauma patients, initial resuscitation needs to be done before surgery. The job of the anesthesiologist is to make sure that the patients are given the best chance to survive the operation by adequate resuscitation. The anesthesiologist is also involved in transferring very sick patients who may require mechanical respiratory support and other medical supports to another medical institution for more specialized treatment.   [top]

CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY

Patient has to swallow a vitamin pill sized video capsule as an endoscope. When the scope travels through the body, images are sent to a data recorder which the patient will wear on a waist belt. Most patients considers the test comfortable. After wards our G.I Functional Disorder Consultant will view the images on a video monitor which may take several hours. Total number of images to be seen is around 55,000.

Why Capsule Endoscopy is performed?

Capsule Endoscopy helps the doctor to determine the cause for:

  • Recurrent abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Bleeding
  • Anemia
  • It is useful to detect small bowel tumors
  • Patients who are on medications (NSAID) for joint pains etc.
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Irritable bowel
  • To monitor the therapeutic effects   [top]

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING CENTRE

A series of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are currently being carried out with the utilization of sophisticated equipment and meticulous process in the Diagnostic Imaging Center. Most of our diagnostic images are recorded digitally for the use of our consultant Radiologists.

General Radiology

A series of conventional radiography is carried out to capture human body. We also called it as plain x-ray examination.
Bone Densitometry

Highly sensitive, using low dose of X ray, bone densitometry helps to identify risk at a much earlier stage. Is to use for measure bone mineral. Estimated risk or actual presence of osteoporosis. Procedure takes 15-20 minutes, is painless and safe.

Digital Fluoroscopy (GE Legend)

A technique for obtaining "LIVE" x-ray images of a living patient. Is use to examine / observe the alimentary tract. Examination to patient's condition in "real time". Can also be used as therapeutic radiology procedure.

Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology is a new and rapid growing branch of medicine in which the procedures are performed under imaging guidance. Sometimes it called the "21st century" surgery.

Lipthotripsy

Breaking stones inside the patient body with shock waves produced by a sophisticated machine called Lipthotripsy.

Mammogram

Special radiological examination for the breasts by using low energy x-ray. To use for breasts screening to allow early cancers to be detected for effective treatment.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging - MRI (GE Echospeed plus)

Uses a strong magnetic field and radio wave with no radiation involved to capture high quality diagnostic value images.
Shows best quality images for soft tissue of human body (muscles, nerves, brain, ligaments and etc).
Can perform angiography in a non-invasive method to detect disease and abnormality.
Is an non-invasive procedure and painless.

Multi-Slice CT Scanning - MSCT (GE Lightspeed Qx/I)

Able to show human soft tissues organ and bone. Enhanced view ability enables early detection of many conditions. Provides faster examination times and diagnosis of many conditions. Multi-slice CT scanners are 8 to 10 times faster than conventional CT scanners.

Single Plane and Bi-Plane Angiography

A useful, essential technique for various diagnostic and Intervention vascular/non-vascular procedures. Allow easily view inside a blood vessel under x-ray guidance, any narrowing of the vessel can then be noted and recorded. Any organ of the body is accessible with the help of fluoroscopy.

Ultrasound Imaging (Siemens Acuson)

Uses high frequency inaudible sound waves technique to capture patient's internal organ picture. Effective for non-invasive imaging of soft tissue organ. Can be used to guide fine needle (tissue biopsy) to facilitate sampling cells from an organ for cancer test. This is an invasive procedure.

The aim of the twenty-five station dialysis centre is to provide optimal dialysis and care to patients so that they can be fully rehabilitated to lead a lifestyle that is as normal as possible.  [top]

HAEMODIALYSIS CENTRE

The Dialysis Centre, which operates from 6am to 6pm, has 25 dialysis machines. With each machines, there is a special chair provided in order to make the dialysis period a comfortable one. Besides that we also have 2 dialysis machines in the ICU, for dialysis patients who are very ill and need close monitoring, and one of them is the Diapact system. This Diapact system provides continuous renal replacement therapy, specially catering for haemodynamically unstable patients requiring ICU care.

We also have our own modern Reverse Osmosis Water system to maintain a high standard of water quality. This ensures that the dilution of the dialysis fluid is done with same water.

A semi automatic computerized reprocessing system ensures the quality of artificial kidney recycling.

Each patient is seen every time he or she comes for a dialysis. Blood transfusion for those who need it (with renal conditions) is also done at the dialysis centre. Provision is available for emergency dialysis if needed.

Kidney failure occurs due to many reasons. Early detection and treatment can save many kidneys. If a person only has kidney impairment, careful attention must be given to protein, potassium and water intake. Those who are not on dialysis but have renal failure must also be extremely careful with protein (meat, tofu, beans, fish, chicken, etc.), potassium and water intake.

If you are on a dialysis program, you will need to keep in mind the following tips:

  • Long term kidney failure needs dialysis 2-3 times a week.
If you feel any nausea or breathlessness, you must call your dialysis nurse or doctor. You may need urgent dialysis.
  • Regular blood tests as prescribed by the doctor must be done. Our laboratory offer these tests at very competitive rates.
  • The Haemodialysis Centre at Penang Adventist Hospital is at your service to give you as much of assistance as possible.   [top]

WELLNESS CENTRE

It was the guiding philosophy of Ellen G. White that led Penang Adventist Hospital to set up a Health Education Department in 1972. The Health Education Department served the community by organizing health-screening programs for diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Public health talks were also organized to help the public to gain a better understanding of disease and risk factors related to them.

In the early 90's, the Preventive Medicine Department was formed. The Preventive Medicine Department sought to complement the acute care services of Penang Adventist Hospital thereby fulfilling the Hospital's motto of "Making Man Whole." Prevention of disease and healthy lifestyle were the two corner stones of the programs and services offered.

A multi-disciplinary team provides programs and services such as health risk appraisals for individuals to identify their risk factors for heart diseases, cancer and diabetes. Programs aimed at reducing risk factors (weight management, smoking cessation and cholesterol control) are also conducted.

Chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure have become common causes of death and illness. Through the Ministry of Health Lifestyle Campaign, the Malaysian public has been made aware of these diseases. Knowledge alone, however, does not translate into behavioral change. Motivation to change and acquiring skills in buying and cooking the right food to maintain health are essential in reversing the risks of disease.

In early 1996, the two departments were merged into the Adventist Wellness Centre, the first of its kind in Penang, with the objective of educating the public in living a healthy and vibrant lifestyle.

Multinational corporations like Intel, Mattel, Motorola and Hitachi are ardent participants in our Corporate Wellness Program. Some 250 people are benefiting from our Wellness programs every month.

The newly formed Diabetic Education Centre was also incorporated into the organizational structure of the Adventist Wellness Centre. The Diabetic Education Centre is a resource centre for diabetes and aims to educate diabetics and the public on lifestyle changes for controlling diabetes and avoiding the complications of the disease.
